Do I pay tax on Vinted sales? (UK checker)

Tools · Published 19 October 2026

Answer three questions to see if Vinted will report you to HMRC, whether it looks like trading, and a rough tax figure.

An estimate, not tax advice. Rates checked against GOV.UK and Vinted UK help on 19 October 2026. This is a rough guide for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Whether you're trading depends on all the facts. If you're unsure, check GOV.UK or ask an accountant.

* Selling your own things can bring Capital Gains Tax only in rare cases, such as one item selling for more than £6,000 at a profit.

Does Vinted charge sellers a fee?

No. Vinted says there are no fees for listing or selling, and you get the full item price. The buyer pays a Vinted fee (Buyer Protection) at checkout. Sellers only pay if they choose extras such as bumps or a wardrobe spotlight.

Vinted reporting to HMRC

Since 2024, platforms such as Vinted, eBay and Etsy must report sellers to HMRC each year if, in a calendar year, they make 30 or more sales or receive €2,000 (about £1,700) or more. The first reports, for 2024, went to HMRC by 31 January 2025. GOV.UK says being reported does not automatically mean you owe tax.

Decluttering or trading?

GOV.UK says you're unlikely to pay tax if you sell personal items from your home, like the contents of a loft or garage. If you buy or make goods to sell at a profit, you're likely to be trading. Trading income up to £1,000 a year is covered by the trading allowance. Above that you'll usually need to register for Self Assessment and pay tax on your profit.

Worked examples

1. Clearing out your wardrobe: 45 sales, £900 received. Vinted will report you, as it's over 30 sales, but this is selling your own things, so you're unlikely to owe tax.

2. Reselling charity shop finds: £3,000 received, £800 spent on stock and postage, £25,000 wages. Using your costs, profit is £2,200; the £1,000 allowance would give £2,000, which is lower, so it's used. Tax at 20% is £400, no Class 4 NI. You'd need to register for Self Assessment.

3. Small maker: £800 of handmade items. That's under £1,000, so the trading allowance covers it: £0 tax and usually no need to register.
