eBay UK fees in brief
UK private sellers pay no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee, except in Motors (cars, motorcycles and vehicles). Fees can apply if you list more than 300 items in a month or pay for upgrades such as Promoted Listings.
Business sellers pay a final value fee that depends on the category, plus a fixed fee per order and a regulatory operating fee, all worked out on the total including postage. eBay's published example rate is 12.8% + 30p with a 0.42% regulatory fee, which is what the calculator starts with. Your category may differ, so check and edit.
Worked examples
1. Private seller, £30 jacket + £3.50 postage (cost £10, postage £3.50). No fees, so profit is £20.00.
2. Business seller, same sale at 12.8% + 30p and 0.42%. Final value fee £33.50 × 12.8% + £0.30 = £4.59, regulatory fee £0.14, total £4.73, profit £15.27.
3. Business seller, £100 item, free postage, 5% Promoted Listings (cost £60, postage £5). Final value fee £13.10, regulatory £0.42, promoted £5.00, total £18.52, profit £16.48.
Is eBay selling taxable?
Clearing out your own things is usually not taxed. Buying to resell, or making things to sell, is usually trading. eBay, like other platforms, reports sellers with 30 or more sales or about £1,700 or more in a calendar year to HMRC. See the hobby or trading checker and the side hustle tax calculator.
